Quenching (and tempering) steels are engineered for heat treatment to achieve a tailored balance of high strength, toughness, and wear resistance. Supplied typically in the annealed or normalized condition for easy machining, components are hardened by austenitizing and quenching, then tempered to the target hardness/strength window. Alloyed grades (e.g., Cr–Mo, Ni–Cr–Mo) provide deeper hardenability for thicker sections, while medium carbon grades offer cost-effective performance for moderate sections. This family is widely used for shafts, gears, bolts, dies, and high-duty machine parts that must withstand impact, bending, torsion, and surface contact fatigue in service.
