Automatic (free-cutting) steels are engineered for high-speed CNC and multi-spindle machining where short, well-controlled chips and tight cycle times are critical. Enhanced machinability is achieved by controlled additions of sulfur and, in some grades, tellurium or lead-free modifiers that promote chip breakage and a lubricating MnS inclusion morphology. Compared to standard carbon steels, these grades deliver higher tool life, smoother surface finish, and reduced burr formation—especially in small diameters and complex geometries. They are typically supplied cold-drawn, straightened, and with tight dimensional tolerances to minimize setup time and ensure repeatability in mass production.
